Workday expands operations in Costa Rica and explains its business model

The American multinational Workday continues its expansion in Costa Rica, focusing on new services and business units while clarifying how its business model differs from traditional outsourcing.

Since it arrived in 2024 with an initial team of 100 employees, Workday has doubled its workforce to 200 people and plans to continue growing in various technological and business areas. The company, which provides enterprise platforms for talent management and business operations, has established its headquarters at America Free Zone (AFZ) in Heredia and is expanding its presence there.

New units and vacancies

Workday announced the incorporation of new divisions in customer experience, global revenue operations, finance, and human resources. Available positions are focused on technological and business areas, prioritizing bilingual talent. The roles they aim to fill include:

  • Data analysts for business functions.
  • Data conversion consultants.
  • Financial professionals specialized in collections and treasury.
  • Software solutions analysts.
  • Functional consultants are responsible for configuring Workday solutions according to customer business requirements.

Workday’s business model

Workday is not a traditional outsourcing company; its business model focuses on developing and supporting its own cloud-based technological solutions. These platforms help companies manage their human resources, finances, and business operations worldwide. Below is an outline of how its model works:

  1. Cloud services (SaaS):
Workday offers its platforms through a subscription model, meaning companies pay a monthly or annual fee to access its tools and services. These platforms allow companies to:
    • Manage payroll and human resources.
    • Perform budgeting and financial analysis.
    • Plan resources and business operations.
  2. Shared service delivery in Costa Rica:
Workday’s offices in Costa Rica operate as a shared services center, providing operational support to global clients in areas such as:
    • Customer support: Addressing technical inquiries related to the use of its platforms.
    • Revenue operations: Managing collections, revenue analysis, and financial project processes.
    • Implementation and consulting: Configuring and customizing Workday platforms to meet specific client needs.
  3. Difference from outsourcing:
Unlike an outsourcing company externalizing complete operational processes, Workday focuses exclusively on offering support, customization, and consulting related to its technological solutions. It does not manage external tasks as a traditional third party but provides specialized services to optimize the use of its software.

Growth projection

According to Jancy Castro, Workday Costa Rica Country Manager, growth is driven by the increasing number of global clients, which requires robust operational support:
“We continue to grow and invest internationally. Costa Rica offers the ideal conditions to provide excellent service to our partners worldwide,” Castro stated.

The company also mentioned that it does not currently have specific plans for expansion into the eastern zone of San José or Cartago. Its current strategy focuses on consolidating and expanding its operations in the America Free Zone (AFZ).

Key differentiator

Workday is a leader in integrated technological solutions for enterprises, with over 65% of the Fortune 500 using its platforms. From Costa Rica, it not only offers support to global clients but also strengthens its reputation as a reliable provider of specialized technological services.
